Why Brands Are Still Choosing SOKO Kenya Amid New U.S. Tariffs

With new 10% reciprocal tariffs on Kenyan exports to the U.S. set to take effect this April, many manufacturers might be concerned about the future of trade. But for Kenya and for responsible fashion brands, this shift is proving to be an opportunity rather than a setback.

While the new tariff changes how Kenya trades with the U.S., the rate remains significantly lower than tariffs imposed on other manufacturing countries like Vietnam (46%), China (34%), and India (26%). In fact, this shift is positioning Kenya as a more attractive source hub for U.S. buyers looking to balance quality, ethics, and cost.

At SOKO Kenya, we’ve seen firsthand why brands continue to partner with us despite the change in policy. Many fashion brands today are looking for more than just low prices. They're looking for value, purpose, and partnerships that reflect their brand values.

We deliver high-quality, beautifully made clothing through ethical and transparent manufacturing, with real, measurable impact. For us, these aren’t just ideals, they’re what we bring to life every day.

We understand what matters. Customers are drawn to brands that stand for something bigger — Brands that offer great products but a story of purpose and artistry.

At SOKO Kenya, we’re proving that fashion can be a force for good by supporting people, uplifting communities, and reducing environmental impact while delivering the quality brands expect.

Our factory is designed with sustainability at its core. 75% of our power comes from on-site solar panels. Rainwater tanks make us self-sufficient for drinking, steaming, and cleaning.

And we divert approximately 2,500kg of fabric waste from landfills every year, repurposing it into accessories or donating it to our SOKO Community Trust Stitching Academy and charity Kujuwa Initiative, for the production of washable sanitary pads.

Through the Kujuwa Initiative, we’ve donated over 30,000 reusable sanitary pads made from factory offcuts, each offering up to three years of safe, sustainable menstrual health support. It’s one way we turn waste into worth, and fashion into impact.

But we don’t stop there. At SOKO Kenya, we believe in empowering our employees and ensuring they can thrive, not just survive. We offer a living wage, free lunch, free medical care, and free childcare for children under 4. We invest in the future of our team through a private pension scheme, and ongoing training and skills development, creating a supportive environment where everyone can grow.

So, while tariffs may be changing the global trade landscape, one thing remains the same: brands are still choosing SOKO Kenya for what we offer beyond production, a genuine partnership rooted in purpose.
